Chapter Twenty-One

The wind could be heard swirling around outside, buffeting the boat and contributing to a greater swell in the water. The pressure of the wind through the flue saw the flames in the wood burner depressed before springing up as they fed on the increased oxygen. Putting down the knife, Tom Janssen picked up a tea towel and dried his hands as he crossed to the burner. Picking up another log, he opened the door and added it to the fire. The air temperature was unseasonably clement for the time of year but the raised wind tore through the boat making it feel less so. Nonetheless, he’d found the time spent living on the boat these past eighteen months enjoyable. The lack of facilities was a challenge but easily overcome with a bit of an effort. What he thought would be a challenge turned out to be less so. Living without a television was far easier than anticipated, although the advent of fibre broadband to the area meant even this was accessible if desired. He used the latter for work but, more often than not, found sitting down in front of a roaring fire with a book much more agreeable.

The liquid hissed as it touched the metal, instantly bubbling away. He stirred the contents and added another. The rice hadn’t stuck. He’d caught it in time. Glancing around, he checked his prep. The Parmesan was grated and ready, as was the fresh chervil and rocket. The table was set. A chilled half bottle of white wine, partly used for cooking, stood alongside two glasses. He didn’t drink as a general rule but, on the odd occasion where it felt warranted, he would. Everything was ready aside from his coat being flung across one of the seats at the dining table. Thinking hard, there was still something missing. Whatever it was it currently escaped him. Looking at his watch, Alice would arrive soon. Provided she wasn’t late. Alice was arguably the most punctual person he knew. She hated to be late. Tamara Greave was the antithesis.

Thinking of Tamara, he gave the contents of the pan a quick stir before reaching for the pathologist’s report Eric furnished him with before he left the office. Putting it down beside the hob, he absently stirred the contents of the pan with one hand as he reread the document. There was something about the conclusions drawn that bothered him that afternoon when they went over the circumstances of Kirsty Davies’ suicide attempt. The material evidence of the damaged
